Tennis | Gonzales tennis splits league games

GONZALES — Gonzales High girls tennis team played two matches last week, blanking the Watsonville Wildcatz 7-0 and then losing by a 5-2 score to Christopher High School.

Both games were played on the Spartan courts.

“After last week, we are 5-2,” said Gonzales head tennis coach Rene Mendez. “We were not able to gut out the win against Christopher, who will likely be our league champions. While we are still in contention for first place, I just don’t see Christopher losing their last three matches. I am proud of our girls, who all played very well against Christopher and left everything out on the courts. We were just not able to win those crucial points. However, as a coach I cannot ask for anything more. The fact that we were in contention to contend for a league title says a lot about our girls and their hard work. The school and the community should be very proud.”

Gonzales singles winners against Watsonville were: Athena Landeros, Adilenne Ramirez, Elizabeth Arreola and Isabel Mendoza. In doubles, Gonzales winning team members were: Valeria Reyes and Jesenia Arriola; Jacqueline Ramirez and Melanie Barrera; and Daniella Pacheco and Iris Valdez.

The Spartans lost all four singles matches against Watsonville, but the doubles teams of Ramirez and Barrera and Pacheco and Valdez claimed wins.

Yesterday Gonzales played the Gilroy Mustangs in Gilroy and will finish the week with a match against the host Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. On Oct. 23, the Spartans play their last regular season match at Oakwood.
