GONZALES — With eight wrestlers winning individual weight classes the Gonzales High School wrestling team won the school’s 20th Mission Trail Athletic League Championship on Thursday at Pacific Grove High School. The Spartans placed first with 184 points to finish ahead of second place Carmel with 107 points. Pacific Grove finished in third place, followed by Greenfield, Soledad, and King City.

Repeating as league individual champions for the Spartans were: Miguel Mendoza (115); Joshua Mendoza (122); Gregorio Alfaro (128); Eric Correa (134); Antonio Viorato (162); Eric Albarran (172); and Robert Ochoa (197). Angel Anguiano won his first league title at 140 pounds.

Coaches for the champion Spartan team were Larry Rodriguez, Sandra Rodriguez, and Sean Hileman.

“This is the third straight championship for our team,” said Gonzales head coach Larry Rodriguez. “Our wrestlers are committed and put in the work on the mats and all our other training. They took no shortcuts and that resulted in a successful season. A big part of that success is from the support that they receive from their parents.”

The top individual and second place finisher have qualified for this Friday and Saturday’s Central Coast Section Championships at Independence High School in San Jose. Nathan Dowd (Carmel); 147-1. Gary Whiteside (Carmel), 2. Aron Uribe (Gonzales); 154-1. Kurt Browphy (Carmel), 2. Justin Uribe (Gonzales); 162-1. Antonio Viorato (Gonzales), 2. Hunter Browphy (Carmel); 172-1. Eric Albarran (Gonzales), 2. Nick Franklin (Pacific Grove); 182-1. Orlandris Mathis (Carmel), 2. Garrett Hynlek (Pacific Grove); 197-1. Robert Ochoa (Gonzales), 2. Jason Roman (Pacific Grove); 222-1. Satchell Sherman (Carmel), 2. Luis Geronimo (Pacific Grove).

Placing third for Gonzales were Victor Llamas at 222 and Isabel Leon at 108. JV results for Gonzales were: Veronica Rodriguez, first place at 128; Jerome Russell second place 134; Chase Castillo, first place at 134, and Pablo Contreras, first place at 140 pounds.
