GONZALES — The Gonzales High tennis team played well in a 5-2 loss to York, winning a singles and doubles match last Thursday on the Spartan courts. Bianca Sanchez won her second match of the season in singles and the team of Magaly Santos and Carolina Perez-Reyes won by forfeit.

“It was a great win for Bianca,” said Gonzales head coach Rene Mendez. “She has been playing well lately and it shows with two wins in the last three matches. Athena Landeros played well and the match was a lot closer than the score indicates. For the first time playing together, and playing the top doubles team, Jesenia Arreola and Iris Valdez played very well.”

On Oct. 17 the Spartans were beaten 7-0 at home by the Santa Catalina Cougars team. All four singles players did well in their matches.

“Overall the team played well against a tough opponent,” said Coach Mendez. “In singles Athena played one of the top girls in the league. Elizabeth played well and Bianca continued her strong play of late.”

This week the Spartans will complete the regular season by playing at Carmel (yesterday) and host the Stevenson Pirates tomorrow afternoon. On Nov. 1 and 2 Gonzales will participate in the Mission Trail Athletic League Singles and Doubles Championships.
