GONZALES — Three wrestlers from Gonzales High School made it to the second day of wrestling at the Pat Lovell Holiday Wrestling Classic last Thursday and Friday at Aptos High School. The wrestling tournament featured 69 schools and was formally known as the Coast Classic.

Miguel Mendoza wrestled at 120 pounds and finished with a 3-2 overall record and had three pins in his victories. Mendoza started the tournament with pins over Hernandez of Alisal and Ryan of Liberty Madero.

Antonio Viorato finished 3-2 in the tournament at 170 pounds and won one match by technical fall over De La Rosa of Lincoln. Robert Ochoa wrestled at 195 pounds and finished with a 4-2 record.

Ochoa began the tournament with wins by pin over Federo of Amador Valley and Cruz of Harbor. After a loss to Tallent of Pitman, Ochoa beat Valverde of Patterson 5-2 and won his next match by pin before losing 9-4 in his final match to Hunter of Cleveland.

Also competing in Aptos were Joshua Mendoza at 126 pounds; Gustavo Castro a 132 pounds; Gregorio Alfaro at 132 pounds (two wins by pin); Angel Anguiano 145 pounds; and Victor Llamas at 195 pounds.

On Saturday at the Trojan Wrath at Alisal High School in Salinas Anissa Aguilar placed third at 138 pounds and Maria Lopez placed third at 132 pounds. This Saturday the Spartan teams will compete at the Apple Cider Wrestling Tournament in Watsonville.

On Jan. 10 Gonzales will travel to Soledad for the first Mission Trail Athletic League dual meet with host Soledad, King City and Greenfield.
