GONZALES — Gonzales Unified School District held its first Teacher Recruitment Fair with job interviews and school tours Feb. 9.

“We were able to welcome all the people who walked through the door and several people signed up for interviews,” said Frank Wells, human resources director for the district. “Of the people signed up for interviews, we were able to make five contractual offers for the upcoming year.”

According to Wells, the district had over 20 openings last year and didn’t want to repeat that for the upcoming school year. The district is planning to attend several other recruitment fairs throughout the state to fill any teacher vacancies.

“The most exciting thing about it is we selected teachers that we would put our own kids in their classrooms,” Wells said.

The recruitment fair was an initiative from Superintendent Yvette Irving.

The school district was also offering a large signing bonus for teachers, ranging from $5,000 to $12,000. School staff is trying to make the event a yearly occurrence.
