GONZALES — An excited group of runners and walkers took to the streets of Gonzales for the annual Gonzales Orange and Black 5K Race on the Fourth of July. The event featured runners and walkers of all ages with medals handed out in four age divisions.

“All the participants had a great time,” said Cesar Ayon, one of the race organizers from Gonzales. “It was a good way to start off the Fourth of July. We had a lot of raffle prizes that we gave out after the race and we are thankful to the businesses that contributed this year.”

Jaime Garcia, a former standout runner for the 2015 Central Coast Section champion Greenfield High Bruin cross country team finished first overall in a time of 18:05. Andrew Funk a sophomore runner for the Gonzales High cross country team placed second overall and first in the youth division. Funk was followed in the third place by his brother Scott Funk. Andrew Funk ran the race in 20:02 and Scott finished in 20:03.

In the women’s division Virginia Bennett of Salinas was first in a time of 25:18, followed by Gigi Kioma in second place in a time of 27:50 and Karen Park was third in a time of 28:01.

Ruby Garcia was the first place youth girl with a time of 31:24 and Angelina Ybarra was the first place girls in the child’s division with a time of 26:35. JT Lopez was first in the child’s (boys) division with a time of 27:47 and Rico Maturino was second with a time of 27:48.
