GONZALES — Isaiah Banuelos scored 24 points to lead the Gonzales Spartan basketball team to a 56-44 non-league over the visiting Greenfield Bruins on Dec. 19 at the Roger Fernando Gym. Pablo Villasenor contributed with 10 points for the 1-7 Spartans.

Gonzales raced to a 21-12 first quarter lead and led 30-23 at halftime. The Spartans secured the victory by outscoring Greenfield 26-21 in the second half. Oscar Villagomez led Greenfield with nine points, including two 3-point baskets and filled his stat sheet with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Agustin Pantoja scored seven points with two 3-point baskets and Angel Villagomez scored seven points with a 3-point basket and four rebounds. Angel Espinosa had six points and four rebounds.

Greenfield (1-5) completed the week with a 69-68 loss at home on Friday to the Marina Mariners. The Bruins fell behind 40-24 in the first half, outscored the Mariners 44 to 29 in the second half only to fall short by one point at the end.

Oscar Villagomez led Greenfield with 24 points. Villagomez had four 3-point baskets, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Angel Villagomez scored 14 points with two 3-point baskets, four rebounds, two assists, and made two steals. Eduardo Villagomez just missed double figures in scoring with nine points and Angel Espinsa added eight points and six rebounds in the Bruins effort.

Greenfield began play today at the North Salinas Steinbach Classic against North Salinas. The Bruins play a non-league game with the Anzar Hawks on Jan. 3 and begin league play on Jan. 5 by hosting Soledad. On Thursday, Jan. 4, Gonzales High will host the Anzar Hawks in the first league game of the years for the Spartans.
