GONZALES — Pablo Villasenor and Isaiah Banuelos of the Gonzales High School basketball team were selected as members of the Coastal League first-team for their efforts on the hardwoods. Villasenor averaged 17.3 points a game and 16.5 rebounds per game. Banuelos averaged 15 points a game and grabbed 10 rebounds a game.

“Following a great year, our boys were recognized for their season at the all-league meeting,” said Gonzales Interim Assistant Coach Todd Bueller. “Pablo Villasenor and Isaiah Banuelos were honored as first-team all-league while Jonathan Ganaden and Gonzalo Villagomez were chosen as second-team. Pablo had dominant games versus Marina and Anzar, two of the top teams in the league. Isaiah made great strides into being a versatile scorer for the Spartans.”

Bueller praised Ganaden and Villagomez for their roles in making Gonzales a better team this season. The pair contributed on the offensive and defensive ends of the game.

“Jonathan Ganaden was a sparkplug for us,” said Bueller. “He moved in and out of the starting lineup being a reliable shooter from outside. He led us in scoring three times during league and was a factor in making our team so difficult to contain on the offensive end. Gonzalo received multiple first-team votes and was the defensive rock of our team. Leading our team in assists, he is a leader by example and was utilized by guarding the best player on each team. Our success relied on our ability to play swarming defense, and convert that into transition baskets and Gonzalo was at the head of that attack.”

Joining Villasenor and Banuelos on the Coastal League first-team from league champion Marina High were Jordan Chaty, Cottrell Ealey, and Will Leander. Rounding out the first-team were Rex Ward (Anzar); Jerry Wu (York); Will Peters (Pacific Collegiate); Clay Acevedo (Pacific Point); and Jarrod Garcia of Ceiba Prep. The second-team included: Ganaden and Villagomez of Gonzales; Diego Bracho, Carlos Bracho, and Elijah Rosa (Anzar); Colby Beck-Watts (Pacific Collegiate); Edwin Gao (York); AJ Akua-Floyd (Pacific Point); Rami Ayyad (Ceiba Prep).

Jordan Chaty of Marina was the league Most Valuable Player and Ron Powell of Marina was selected as the Coach of the Year. Deandre Jordan of Pacific Point and Kyle Larson of Marina were the Elgie Bellizio Sportsmanship Award winners.
