SOUTH COUNTY — Led by three weight class winners, the Gonzales High wrestling team placed sixth overall at the Apple Cider Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Watsonville.

Spartan wrestlers Gregorio Alfaro (136), Antonio Viorato (174) and Robert Ochoa won their respective weight classes, and Miguel Mendoza won a third-place medal at 124 pounds.

Los Gatos High School won the overall team competition with 220 points, followed by Palma (159 points), Fremont (152 points), San Benito (147 points), Carmel (133 points) and Gonzales (115.5 points). Soledad High placed 14th with 59.5 points, Greenfield placed 15th with 52 points and King City placed 22nd with 30 points. There were a total of 30 schools that competed in the tournament.

Alfaro beat Bulatao of Fremont with a 9-0 major decision; Viorato beat Mailot of Los Gatos, 8-4; and Ochoa pinned Bryan of Soquel by pin in the finals. Mendoza earned his medal with a 15-0 technical fall over Gonzalez of North Salinas.

Greenfield had three medal winners in Ivan Torres at 117 pounds, Christopher Guzman at 124 pounds and Adalberto Cornejo at 289 pounds. Torres placed fifth and Cornejo placed sixth for the Bruins.

Placing and earning medals for Soledad were: Raymond Cantu, sixth place at 110 pounds, and Juan Sandoval, fifth place at 186 pounds.

Andres Cervantes of King City placed fourth at 110 pounds.
