GONZALES — With two home wins last week the Gonzales boys basketball team is 3-0 and in first place in the Coastal League. The Spartans improved to 5-8 overall with the victories over Marina and Pacific Point.

In the game with the Marina Mariners on Tuesday January 16th, Spartan center Pablo Villasenor scored 25 points and had 18 rebounds to lead Gonzales. Isaiah Banuelos had his own double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The Spartans needed all that offense as they hung on to beat the Mariners, 79-78.

Last Thursday the Spartans had an easier time of it, defeating the Pacific Point Christian School Lions of Gilroy, 74-34. Banuelos led in scoring with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Villasenor added 14 points and just missed 20 rebounds for the game with 18. Alex Morga was the third Spartan in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Gonzales will play three games this week in the Coastal League. On Monday the Spartans hosted Ceiba College Prep and will play at the York School tonight. On Friday the Spartans will take on the Anzar Hawks in San Juan Bautista.
