SOUTH COUNTY — Road games were the place for league victories for the Gonzales High Spartan and King City Mustang baseball teams. Gonzales won 10-4 at King City on March 27 and King City beat the Spartans 9-5 on the Gonzales diamond last Thursday.

The Mustangs began the week with a 7-3 win at home last Monday against the Pacific Grove Breakers. Clay Barbree earned the pitching win, striking out seven and received relief help in the seventh inning from John Serrano. Jose Arreola had two hits and three runs batted in, Cedrick Perez had three hits, and Brian Lopez added two hits.

“PG (Pacific Grove), won league last year and had ever starter back from last year,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “They are well coached and know how to play ball. I believe we play good baseball down in South County too, so it was nice to sweep them with two wins as the boys rose to the occasion. Unfortunately we had to play four games in five days and the next day after an emotional game we got beat by a good Gonzales team at home. We did split the next game and ended the week with a win against Coast Union (5-1). To go 3-1 and have won six of our last seven is a good two weeks.”

In the Gonzales game Xando Mendez earned the pitching win and finished with five strikeouts. Alex Morga hit two of three and two RBIs, Giovanni Garcia had two hits for the Spartans, and Mendez helped himself with two hits and an RBI.

In the rubber match at Gonzales Brian Lopez pitched seven innings of the win and Perez had four hits and two RBI’s. Barbree had three hit and three RBIs and Adam Cortezs had two hits and an RBI.

Mendez led Gonzales with three hits and three RBIs, Dillan Lopez added two hits, and Gonzalo Villagomez finished with two hits. Villagomez absorbed the pitching loss for Gonzales. On Saturday the Spartans played a non-league game at home with North Monterey County and lost by a 12-7 score after leading by four runs.
