GONZALES — For the first time since the 2013-2014 basketball season the Gonzales High boys basketball team earned a spot in the Central Coast Section Playoffs. The Spartans finished second in the Coastal League and were 12-10 overall.

Last night Gonzales traveled to Salinas for the opening round of the playoffs against the Palma Chieftains. Palma finished 12-12 overall and were 6-6 in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division. The winning team advanced to tomorrow’s next round of play.

The Spartans completed the regular season with a 70-49 win over Pacific Point, a 60-55 win over York, and a 63-39 victory over Ceiba Prep. Gonzales finished with a 10-2 record in the Coastal League just one game behind league champion Marina High.

In the win over York Isaiah Banuelos and Pablo Villasenor scored 15 points apiece to lead the Spartans in scoring and freshman Xavier Cervantes finished the game with four 3-point baskets. Last Tuesday in Gonzales against Ceiba Prep, Gonzalo Villagomez and Jayson Flores held league leading scorer Jarrod Garcia to a season-low 10 points. Jonathon Ganaden had 18 points and Villasenor had a double-double in points and rebounds.

On Friday against Pacific Point, Banuelos had 27 points to lead Gonzales to the home victory. Villasenor, Villagomez, and Jordan Morales all scored in double figures.
