Fifth Street to only allow local truck deliveries

GONZALES — Gonzales City Council approved a resolution June 17 to take the truck route designation off Fifth Street and Alta Minor.

According to Building Official Harold Wolgamott, residential streets have markings that prohibit vehicles over five tons on them with the exception of deliveries.

“If they are making a delivery to your house, a refrigerator or stove, that is legally allowed,” Wolgamott said. “Any local delivery.”

Gonzales residents have raised concerns over the damage caused by trucks using side streets or Fifth Street, a heavy traffic zone since the repavement of Alta Street. Resident Roman Barba rides his bicycle down side streets and claimed that it was better to ride his bicycle on the sidewalk; however, that would lead to a citation.

“I drive to the other side of town with my bike over the bridge and the streets are pretty nice on that side of town,” Barba said. “You come over here, Third, Second, Belden, Center Street, all these streets are a mess.”

Street repairs would be necessary, according to Barba, who said the streets could even be repaired one street at a time.
