GONZALES — Teacher showmanship, meetings, games, lunchtime activities and brunchtime activities were how the Gonzales High School FFA celebrated National FFA week 2018.

“This past week was National FFA week, where we did activities during lunch and brunch,” said Chapter Vice President MariaElena Ramirez.

Over the past week, the Gonzales FFA members went to Fairview Middle School to try to recruit eighth graders who will be coming to Gonzales High School next year. Then on Feb. 23, the FFA members held a teacher showmanship competition during lunch.

“FFA to me means family, cooperation and a chance to express myself doing what I love the most,” said Leobard Rosas, FFA reporter and third-year member.

Beatriz Rosas, a senior at Gonzales High School, has been part of the Livestock Show Team for the past four years.

“Currently I have a market steer for the Monterey County Fair and a market hog for the Salinas Valley Fair,” said Rosas. “My favorite part about showing animals is the intensity side of the show ring while having all those people watch us.”

Monica Jacinto, second-year FFA member, attended the L.A. Conference, where she had a chance to interact with the state officers and other chapters.

“This upcoming April we are going to our annual state conference in Anaheim,” said Jacinto.

Chapter President Samantha Santos said, “FFA really develops your premiere leadership, personal growth and career success. We are the world’s only hope, we are the future. This is FFA.”

The Gonzales High School FFA chapter held their monthly meeting Feb. 22, in which the members honored National FFA week. During the meeting, the FFA officers recognized Maya Mendoza for selling 42 containers of cookie dough to benefit the chapter. The club also had a balloon contest where there were teams of FFA members each with a string with a balloon attached to it. Members tried to pop balloons of teams with different colored strings then themselves.
