GONZALES — About 180 Gonzales students are receiving after-school help through the Expanded Learning After School Services Program, which offers homework assistance along with recreational activities for the youth.

The program, now in its third year, is part of a collaboration between the City of Gonzales and the Gonzales Unified School District.

“The program has been implemented,” said City Manager Rene Mendez. “The school has reimbursed the city for some of the costs. The memorandum of understanding just sets the parameters for this school year.”

The after-school program is partially funded by the Gonzales Unified School District and partially by the City of Gonzales. The program has changed over the years from recreation to educational assistance to provide more after-school help.

“The school does the education and intervention portion and we do the homework part,” Mendez said. “This year we’re providing the homework assistance as well as the recreation enrichment part of the program.”

The program is under the direction of Recreation Coordinator Sara Papineau-Brandt. Currently it is held at Fairview Middle School and La Gloria Elementary School.

The memorandum of understanding between the City and the school district was approved Feb. 4.
